Occupational Therapy, Life skills in Falmouth, Maine

Meet Mia , Your Occupational Therapist serving Falmouth, Maine

Over the years, working in schools and transition programs, one of the most profound realizations I had was witnessing the anxiety that so many of my students and their families faced as graduation day approached.

What should have been a day of hope and excitement was often overshadowed by worry. Students were anxious about losing touch with friends, and families were uncertain about how to help their newly graduated young adult structure their days without the familiar routine of school.

The question on everyone’s mind seemed to be, “Now what?”

As time went on, former students reached out to me, sharing their struggles. They talked about difficulties in keeping jobs, a strong desire to live independently without knowing how to start, and, most heartbreakingly,

“Miss Mia, I don’t have any friends—can we be friends?”

Parents echoed a similar concern:

“It’s like all the support and services just stopped after graduation. People with disabilities grow up too, you know!”

It was in those moments that I realized my true calling. These individuals are my people, and my path as an occupational therapist became clear. My journey took me through graduate school in London and to various parts of the world, where I had the privilege of working with neurodivergent adults who were defying expectations—living bold, fulfilling lives in ways many never imagined, whether in a bustling city or at a restaurant run by adults with Down syndrome in Tuscany.
